- Native to the rugged Scottish Highlands and Western Isles, Highland Cattle are one of the oldest and most recognizable cattle breeds in the world. Their thick, double-layered coats and hardy constitutions have made them remarkably adaptable to a wide range of climates — including the heat and variable conditions of Central Texas. Their ability to thrive on rougher forage and open terrain makes them an increasingly popular addition to diversified Texas ranch operations.
- Highland Cattle are immediately recognizable by their long, flowing coats — which come in a range of colors including red, black, brindle, dun, yellow, and white — and their impressive, wide-set horns. Both bulls and cows carry horns, with mature animals developing a distinctive sweeping spread that can exceed 40 inches tip to tip. Their thick forelock, known as a dossan, helps protect their eyes from insects and harsh weather conditions.
